I wen to a Save the Dream Event in Atlanta a few months ago. My husband and I have a judgement on our credit plus credit cards & medical debts. We were thinking about joining a debt payment program with Consumer Credit Counseling that Clark Howard recommend when you want have debts that you want to pay off. My question is how long do we have to wait to start the NACA process. Do we have to wait til we finish the program? Have anybody tried this program?

From what I understand you should NOT enter one of these programs without consulting your MC.

When we attended the workshop they said to do NOTHING to debts over 2 years old, and for the other stuff you have to pay it off or have 1 year of ontime payments for the NACA program.

I would schedule a meeting with your MC immedaitely to find out debt by debt what you need to do.

Thank you, we don’t have a MC yet. I did call the NACA-Atl office. So I was told that a MC will contact me in 24-48 hrs.

Does anyone know when the 2 year timeframe starts? For instance, if you have a debt with an original date of 2010, but it was sent to a collection agency in 2012, does the 2 year countdown start from the original date or the date the collection agency reports it to the credit bureau?

    Hello shaddtigerintx,

Since the account going to the collection agency means the debt was transferred to someone else, it becomes a “new” debt again at that point. The countdown will start from the time the collection agency reports it.
