    I am a widow and live in an area where there just aren’t any jobs. I have a daughter with major health problems and a rare birth defect. I have been served sheriff sale papers and know that at this point there is no solution. If I could just get help with securing a “pod” type unit to save our belongings I would be grateful. I will find a place to put my daughter but I will be homeless. I have come to terms with that. No social security for me for over 3 years and the administration has fought us for 5 years to give my daughter benefits. I’m at the end of my rope. Thanks for listening

    What area are you in?
    Have you considered selling some of your belongings (instead of storing them) to fund a relocation? The pod will store your things, but you’d need to store the pod somewhere, and there are fees associated with everything you’re looking to do.
    Also, places like NYS, and any other welfare state, would certainly pay for your health insurance as well as your daughters. They’d pay your rent, buy you food, give you a cell phone, update your appliances to brand new ones, pay for your heat in the winter and AC in the summer. There is no excuse for homelessness, being hungry or even needing a job in this country anymore.

    I know in my area, and just about everywhere on the east coast there are millions of jobs going unfilled. I think you’re better off getting back on your feet than getting a “pod”.

    Hello serenedi,

    Jack_Toepfer makes some very good points. Even though a sherriff’s sale date has been posted, those are frequently postponed while a solution is being sought.

    Since you posted this in the Member Assistance Program (MAP) section of the forum, that implies you bought the house originally through NACA. Is that correct?

    Thanks for your responses. I will give a call on Tuesday after the holiday. But I have to tell you what happened to me this week. Yes I continue to look for work. The other day I got a response to an application I filed that went like this. “Wow you do have a lot of experience. But I am only hiring part time. I will keep your resume on file though” I wrote back ” I would be willing to work part time” and never heard anything back. Tried calling and got to leave a message. Then I went to the welfare office to see what else we could get outside of food stamps and was told NO to housing assistance, NO toward utility assistance, (only available in the winter) and No to anything else except here’s the number for transportation and “This is a resort area, there hasn’t been jobs here in years” My response was there hasn’t ben resorts here since the 60’s and she laughed. There really is no help here and never thought I would need it before I moved here. I purchased my house on my own with monies I received from my husband’s death. Put over 50% down. We had social security when we came here but my kids aged out and although I was told when my husband died that I could begin benefits again at 55 that has changed and now have to wait till 60. My daughters claim for SS is over 5 years old and all we ever hear is dnied denied denied. We have a new claim in now. And yes if I drive 45 miles away into Jersey there are a ton of jobs but with my daughters health situation and many doctor appointments who is going to hire me. When I did work in this area I would pick her up from school and she would stay at my job (retail) but now that isn’t possible because the only retail jobs are 25 miles from where we live. BTW I do want to work. I am not looking for a free ride. I promise to call Tuesday. Hopefully we can work out a solution for us. Thanks for your time.

    Just an FYI – Your potential employers cannot disregard your application for employment based on your child’s health. They are not allowed to cherry pick healthy families to hire. If you’re physically unable to do the job, they don’t have to hire you, but they don’t care about the rest of your family and any other associated medical bills. Whether or not your high risk isn’t their concern, it is the concern of their health insurance provider.

    Now, if you’re referring to the fact that you cannot go to work 8-5 M-F because of your situation, I could certainly see that preventing you from getting a job. Ever consider working from home? There are tele- jobs available everywhere – because you can be anywhere with a phone and an internet connection to do the work. Call some collections agencies… they pay well and the harder you work the more money you make. (I hate tele- people in general but it is a job none the less, lol)

    I want to thank you all for your help and responses. I have just gotten off the phone with the legal assistance attorney and he said no job no extention no home. He told me to apply to the housing authority in the next county because there is none in our county but there is a waiting list and nothing will happen in time for the sheriff’s sale. I applied to 8 jobs this week and was told with all position has been filled. I guess there really is no help out there. Forget desparate I have lost. Thanks for your time.
