HUD SECRETARY SPEECH TO FACE CLOSE SCRUTINY
Housing Secretary Julian Castro will speak at the National Press Club today about the state of housing and HUD’s plans for 2015. And Bruce Marks will be watching. Closely.
Mr. Marks, Founder and CEO of the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation (NACA) has now been the nation’s foremost housing activist for a generation, since founding the organization in 1988. His accomplishments have ranged from establishing the nation’s first Housing Trust Fund for hotel workers in Boston, to warning Congress of the coming mortgage crisis seven years before it began, to launching the massive “Save the Dream Tour” program in 2007 to assist homeowners with unaffordable mortgages, to creating the innovative and game-changing 15-year Wealth Building Home Loan (or “Freedom Loan”) in late 2014.
“There is still a major housing crisis in this country”, Mr. Marks, the Boston Globe’s 2007 Bostonian of the Year, declared. “The banks aren’t lending, four million homes are still underwater and even with the President’s recent announcement of a reduction in FHA’s mortgage insurance premiums, there is much more to be done to provide affordable homeownership for working people. Secretary Castro needs to recognize these facts and tell the National Press Club and the country how he intends to resolve these problems that still threaten the American Dream of home ownership and hold back our economy.”
No single individual has done more to bring the banks in line and fight to create and preserve home ownership opportunities than Bruce Marks. Descriptions of Mr. Marks range from “The Homebuyer’s Champion” (NY Times) to a “Non-Violent Bank Terrorist”. No matter what Secretary Castro says during his address tomorrow, there is no doubt whatsoever that Mr. Marks’ reaction to those remarks will be insightful, impassioned and well worth hearing.
